Take A Bow

Playing with light and shadow while my sunflower lasts. :) This reminds me of all the teachers who should get a standing ovation for all that they did to keep classrooms operational in 2020. Take a bow!

Sunflowers...it's been awhile.  After a long break, I realized I missed you.  Still going with viridian, my current color crush.

Memories From The MoMA

12x24

oil on stretched canvas

In 1997, I was working as a designer in New York City and visited the MoMA on my lunch hour one day to view a modern still life exhibit. Picasso's 'Still Life with Pitcher and Apples' really captivated me. It was that plate of apples sitting on top of that super curvy pitcher that inspired me. I had never seen this piece in my art history class or any of the art books I owned. I loved how fresh and casual it was for a still life. It made me feel like he actually had fun painting it. Even though it was painted in 1919, it still looks modern. I bought a poster of the Picasso still life at the museum gift shop that day and it still hangs in my house today!

Three Amigos

6x8

oil on cradled linen panel

I'm still in the throes of back to school.  With the kids busy, I've been experimenting with some paint colors that I've had for awhile but never really explored their possibilities.  This week it's been viridian.  It can overpower a painting and look a little acidic at times, but I'm starting to realize it can be really beautiful when mixed with other colors.  I love how it complements the red of the apples.

This is painted on a cradled panel, hardware is included and it's ready to hang.

Here We Go

6x6
oil on linen panel

Apples always seem like a symbol of school to me.  We had our start of school a couple weeks ago, and it was very bitter-sweet this year.  I have 18 year old twins that started college,  each 4 and 5 hours away.  We were so excited for them to start this new chapter in their lives, but at the same time it was so hard to let them go.  I have another son that is in his junior year of high school, and still at home.  I think he's getting more attention now than he is used to!

Desert Sky No.1

5x7

oil on gessobord

Our family vacation was to Big Bend National Park this summer.  The skies and desert landscape were stunning.  It felt like we were on another planet.  It is awesome to see the vast amount of land left in its natural state.  This was the view as you enter the park...its lowest elevation.

Tall Grass & Mesquite

West Texas. Love the rustic beauty of the Mesquite trees. Getting some more work in on greens and aerial perspective in landscape, and keeping the brushstrokes loose.

Deep Blue Bayou

SOLD

11x14

oil on stretched canvas

Getting more comfortable with my palette knife. I used it to apply the myriad of blues that make up the water that this magnolia is hanging over at the banks of the bayou.  I like the mix of marks that I get from using a brush and a palette knife in the same painting.

Love To Love You

More inspiration from my Southern Magnolia tree. I've been capturing the light while simplifying my design, and focusing on surface texture and contrast. It's been so fun to loosen up!

Sun's Out

 SOLD

8x8, oil on stretched canvas

I've been focusing on values and surface texture lately.  I feel like I got closer to what I'm going for with this magnolia.  It's so hard to capture the stroke textures in a still photo.  You can see a video of this painting that really shows off the texture on my instagram @khastingshoganart.  You'll also catch a glimpse of my "messy" studio. ;)

Southern Belle

8x8

We planted our Southern Magnolia tree in our backyard 8 years ago when we moved to Texas.  It is 20 feet tall now, with dinner plate sized flowers that smell like lemons.  It is, hands down, my favorite tree- a true beauty.

Color Wheel

Bohemia

 18x18

oil on stretched canvas

One of my favorite paintings is "The Yellow Scale" by Frantisek Kupka. I am just mesmerized by the variety of yellows and the purple complements that he used in that painting. I could look at it all day. I was thinking of it when I painted "Bohemia". Kupka was from the eastern part of Bohemia before it became a part of the Czech Republic. There is some thick palette knife work on this one. It will need at least two weeks to dry. It is not framed.

Taco Tuesday

SOLD
6x6
oil on gessobord panel

The dramatic view from my kitchen window while I was making dinner last night! Painted with a palette knife for lots of texture on the flat board panel. It's a completely different painting experience to paint with a knife vs. a brush. I felt a little out of my element, but I'm happy with how it came out. Painted on a gessobord panel. This is NOT framed.
